Utah Occupations and Wages for 2011

Below is a data visualization of average wages in Utah by occupation for 2011. The data was pulled from the Utah Department of Workforce Services and has some interesting items. Three items of interest to me:

• The highest paying engineering position is a sales engineer, likely to the chagrin of real, accredited engineers.
• It’s quite obvious that the highest paying jobs are those with the greatest schooling, on average. There are many exceptions to this, but clearly the right schooling pays off (that may not always hold true after accounting for student debt – depends upon the occupation).
• It is kind of disturbing that those occupations primarily dealing with our society’s elderly in nursing homes (Nursing Aides, Orderlies, and Attendants) and children in daycare (Childcare Workers) have some of the lowest average wages. Perhaps we should rethink the situation of trusting our helpless loved ones to the care of low-paid workers.

I’ve been working on the GeoFetch project at Startup Weekend Ogden and we were talking about the great reception the app had during our testing and validation. I decided to create a data visualization of the Twitter feedback mentioning the project and, while doing so, decided to add the ability to filter the same way for several other projects.
